About Me

Violinist Cheng Io Lo is currently pursuing her Master's degree at The Juilliard School, studying with Daniel Phillips and Laurie Smukler. She has performed in some of the world's most renowned venues, including Carnegie Hall, David Geffen Hall, among others. In 2023, she made her solo debut at Alice Tully Hall, performing with the Columbia University Orchestra under the baton of Jeffrey Milarsky. Cheng Io has earned recognition in several esteemed competitions, including first prizes at the International Grande Music Competition, Columbia University Concerto Competition, Manhattan School of Music Chamber Music Competition, National Young Virtuosi Recital Competition, the 4th Hong Kong International Violin Competition, and the Macau Young Musicians Competition.

In 2014, Cheng Io received the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau Prize, granting her a full scholarship to pursue musical studies in the United States. She studied with Nicholas Mann at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, where she served as concertmaster of the Symphony Orchestra and was a recipient of the Patinka Kopec Precollege Violin Scholarship. A National YoungArts Winner, she has appeared on NPR's From the Top with her string quartet and has taken part in solo public masterclasses with artists including Kyung Wha Chung, Augustin Hadelich, Sergey Malov, and David Waterman. Cheng Io has also collaborated with members of the Emerson, Juilliard, Brentano, Borromeo, and American String Quartets. She has attended leading festivals such as IMS Prussia Cove, Kneisel Hall, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Yellow Barn, Heifetz International Music Institute, and the Bowdoin International Music Festival. In addition to the violin, Cheng Io has also performed chamber music on viola.

Dedicated to mentorship and outreach, Cheng Io has served as a mentor at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and the Heifetz International Music Institute's PEG Program. She has coached young musicians from underprivileged communities through her involvement with Music to Save Humanity. She is also an active contributor to the classical music community as Streaming and Digital Media Coordinator at The Violin Channel.

Beyond her performance career, Cheng Io has conducted research in music therapy as well as social, abnormal, and developmental psychology. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Business Management from Columbia University, graduating Cum Laude with Honors in Psychology as part of the prestigious Columbia-Juilliard Exchange Program.
